UC Berkeley Seismic Replacement Building 1 (SRB1)

Berkeley, CA

Site: 70,000 sf     No. Stories: 3 stories

As a part of the University of California’s SAFER Program (Seismic Action Plan for Facilities Enhancement and Renewal) Heller Manus designed the new Seismic Replacement Building 1 (SRB1) on U.C. Berkeley’s campus as a 70,000 sf multi-purpose building. The three-story structure is designed to house campus programs relocated from other buildings as various campus buildings undergo seismic retrofit. As such, the building is intended to maximize flexibility, accommodating various short-term tenants over the years. The building design was developed to preserve local specimen trees, an element regarded as an intrinsic part of the neighborhood’s character.
