Beach Chalet Renovation

1000 Great Highway, San Francisco, CA

The Beach Chalet renovation in San Francisco revitalizes a beloved coastal landmark through a thoughtful interplay of restoration and contemporary design. Prominently located along the Great Highway on the western edge of Golden Gate Park and overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Beach Chalet had remained vacant for over a decade. Heller Manus developed a renovation program for the landmark building, which was designed by Willis Polk and constructed in 1925. The building's program includes a Golden Gate Park Environmental Visitor’s Center and gift shop on the ground floor and the Beach Chalet Brewery & Restaurant on the second floor with commanding ocean views.

Modifications to the building include the addition of a new elevator, ADA-compliant restrooms, and interior finishes in keeping with the building’s historic character. Circulation is reimagined to create a more intuitive and accessible sequence, linking the upper-level restaurant, ground-floor visitor center, and adjacent park amenities with clarity and ease. Seismic upgrades and high-efficiency systems are integrated discreetly, enhancing resilience while preserving the building’s architectural authenticity. The renovation respects the existing interior WPA frescos by Lucien Labaudt. Heller Manus was also the architect for the new Park Chalet Restaurant and Bar which was added behind the main lobby as a light-filled, open-air pavilion that faces Golden Gate Park. The result is a renewed civic destination that honors its heritage, elevates the visitor experience, and reasserts the Beach Chalet as a vibrant threshold between the city and ocean.
