St. Francis Wellness Center
This six-story building is the first completed phase of facility expansion for Saint Francis Hospital. The St. Francis Wellness Center is comprised of 63,600 gross square feet of office space, 1,900 net square feet of retail space, and parking for 124 cars. Program requirements include outpatient clinics and an ambulatory surgery center.
The resulting design emphasizes scale and detail in response to the urban residential character of the surrounding neighborhood reinforced by the use of brick, bay windows, and articulated parapets. St. Francis Wellness Center was the winner of the first San Francisco Beauty Contest and of the 1992 Grand Award from the Pacific Coast Builder’s Association Gold Nugget Awards. The master plan and building design received planning approval only after extensive work with neighborhood community groups who were concerned about the quality and quantity of hospital growth in their vicinity.
